Griswald got to go on his first road trip when I packed him into the car and headed to Gainesville for his appointment with Dr. Roger Clemmons DVM. I had a map, good directions and a reservation at a dog friendly motel. The plan was that the following day, I would meet with Dr. Clemmons and he would evaluate Griswald. Next, I would leave Griswald overnight so they could give him an MRI and complete any other tests early the following morning. In the afternoon I would meet with Dr. Clemmons and he would go over the test results with me. The initial exam would cost $175.00. The tests would cost a lot more... between $1100 and $1300. I would have to give them a deposit of $1100 when I signed the paperwork and left Griswald with them that first night. I made it to Gainesville , checked into the motel and then headed to the University of Florida, Veterinary Medical Center, Small Animal Clinic, the following morning. In a few minutes I saw the first sign directing me to the grounds of the Clinic .It reminded me of a New England campus. There were lots of leafy trees and there were animals everywhere! There was a huge dog with one leg in a cast being walked back and forth. A couple of dogs with "cones" around their necks and lots of students and vet techs gently exercising and evaluating their patients. I felt hopeful being surrounded by so much animal- centered activity. When I stepped through the doors of the Clinic I immediately felt at home. The receptionists fussed over Griszwald, got me coffee, weighed and registered him then introduced me to Dr. Clemmons's Intern, Greg Reppas. I'd been worried about leaving Grizwald overnight at the Clinic but I realized he would be in great hands and it would be ok.
